Meet The Founder

Our Story — From the Precinct to the Store

Things From Africa was born from a journey of resilience, creativity, and opportunity.

My name is Hendrix Cleva Masina, and I am originally from Malawi. Like many who come from humble beginnings, I arrived in South Africa with a dream — but without a clear path. My journey began at the V&A Waterfront, where I worked as a busker within the precinct, performing as a living statue.

Standing still for long hours, observing people, and engaging with visitors from all over the world was more than just a way to earn a living — it was a season of growth. As a living statue, I learned patience, discipline, and the power of presence. I learned how to connect with people without words, how to draw attention through creativity, and how to represent something meaningful through expression.

The V&A Waterfront gave me more than just a place to perform — it gave me an opportunity. An opportunity to grow, to be seen, and to believe that something greater was possible.

For that, I remain deeply grateful.

From Opportunity to Ownership

Over time, that small beginning grew into a bigger vision. I saw how much people appreciated African creativity and craftsmanship, and I knew there was potential to build something meaningful.

That vision became Things From Africa — a business now proudly operating within the V&A Waterfront.

To move from performing as a living statue within the precinct to owning a store in the same environment is something I do not take lightly. It is a full-circle journey, and a reminder of what opportunity, consistency, and faith can create.

Connecting Africa to the World

Today, Things From Africa works with skilled artisans, many from rural communities. Some of these artisans have decades of experience, yet have never had access to international markets.

Through this business, we are building a bridge:
 From local craftsmanship
 To global customers

Every chessboard, every wooden toy, carries not just craftsmanship — but a story of heritage, skill, and resilience.

More Than a Business

This is not just about selling products.

It is about:

Creating opportunities
Uplifting communities
Preserving African craftsmanship
 Our Vision

We aim to:

Empower artisans with sustainable income
Train young people in woodcraft skills
Expand African handmade products into global markets
 A Personal Journey

As someone who once stood within the V&A Waterfront precinct as a living statue, I understand the value of opportunity.

Things From Africa is built on that very principle —
that when opportunity meets determination, transformation is possible.
